When to Visit Greece

  • Spring: The weather becomes milder and more pleasant. In the south, temperatures vary from 12°C to 20°C (54°F to 68°F), and in the north, from 10°C to 18°C (50°F to 64°F). Spring is ideal for enjoying the blooming landscapes.
  • Summer: Get ready for warm to hot weather. The south heats up with temperatures between 22°C and 35°C (72°F to 95°F), while the north remains slightly cooler, ranging from 18°C to 25°C (64°F to 77°F). Coastal areas enjoy refreshing breezes.
  • Autumn: This season features mild to warm temperatures, with the south experiencing 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F) and the north having 13°C to 20°C (55°F to 68°F). Autumn is a wonderful time to enjoy the changing colors of nature, often with fewer tourists.
  • Winter: In the south, expect temperatures ranging from 8°C to 15°C (46°F to 59°F), while the north is cooler, with temperatures from 5°C to 10°C (41°F to 50°F). This season is the rainiest, especially in the north.

Questions Everyone Always Asks…

Tap water is only safe to drink in Athens and mainland Greece. On the Greek Islands, you must drink bottled water.

Tipping is expected in Greece. It is customary to tip at least 10% unless already included which is only common in upscale restaurants.

No! You can’t throw toilet paper in the toilets in Greece. Sometimes there will be no sign, but that doesn’t mean you can do it. It is very important to just use the bin provided for all toilet paper.

Greece offers a variety of vegan food options. The Greek diet is rich in fresh vegetables, legumes, grains, and olive oil, which are all vegan-friendly. Traditional dishes like dolmades (stuffed grape leaves), gigantes plaki (baked giant beans), and various salads can be enjoyed by vegans.

If you’re traveling from the U.S., Canada, the UK, Australia, or most EU countries, you can enter Greece visa-free for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. However, starting in mid-2025, U.S. and other non-EU travelers will need to apply for an ETIAS travel authorization before entering. If you plan to stay longer than 90 days, you’ll need to apply for a visa or residency permit. Always check the latest entry requirements before booking your trip.

The best time to visit Greece depends on your travel style. For warm weather and lively island vibes, visit between May and September, with July and August being peak season (and the most crowded). If you prefer fewer crowds and lower prices, April, May, September, and October are great shoulder-season months with pleasant weather. For a budget-friendly trip, consider the off-season (November to March)—while some islands quiet down, cities like Athens remain vibrant.

  • Uber & Ride Share: In most cities in Greece, ride-share options such as Uber and Free Now are available. On smaller Greek Islands you will need to find a taxi.

Travel Tips For Greece

Scams

Scams in Greece aren’t common, but be cautious in busy tourist areas like Athens and Santorini. Always confirm taxi fares before the ride and check restaurant bills, as service fees may be added unexpectedly. Avoid overly friendly strangers offering “free” gifts or services.

Safety

I never felt unsafe in Greece, but I was always mindful of my belongings. Pickpocketing can happen in busy areas like Athens’ metro, Monastiraki, and Plaka. Keep an eye on your things, especially in crowds, and avoid overly touristy bars late at night.

Cash & Card

Credit cards are accepted in Greece, but cash is preferred in small shops, tavernas, and local markets. Some places won’t take cards for small purchases, so always carry some euros. ATMs are widely available, but fees can be high on the islands.

Tipping Etiquette in Greece

You may not be used to tipping, depending on where you are traveling from. I am from the US, where leaving a tip for a service is customary.

Tipping in Greece is appreciated but not always expected. I encourage you to leave a tip in Greece, and below is a helpful guide for when and how much to tip for various services during your visit:

Restaurants

  • Casual Dining: 10% of the total is customary if you’re satisfied with the service.
  • Fine Dining: A tip of 10-15% of the total bill is appreciated for exceptional service, although a service charge may already be included in the bill. It’s a good idea to check the bill to see if a service charge has been added.

Taxis

  • Taxi Rides: Rounding up to the nearest euro is common for short trips. For longer journeys, tipping 5-10% of the fare is a kind gesture if the service was good.
  • Airport or Hotel Transfers: A tip of 1-2 euros per bag can be offered for help with luggage, in addition to rounding up the fare.

Other Services

  • Hotel Staff: You can tip porters around 1-2 euros per bag and housekeeping 1-2 euros per day. For concierge services, if they go above and beyond, a tip of 5-10 euros is appropriate.
  • Tours: For group tours, a tip of 2-5 euros per person per day for the tour guide and half that amount for the driver is customary if you’re pleased with their service.
  • Spa Services: If you visit a spa, a tip of 10-15% of the total service cost is customary if the service was enjoyable.

Tipping is always at your discretion and should reflect your level of satisfaction with the service provided. Carrying small bills is handy for ensuring you can tip appropriately.
