Apollonia: The Heartbeat of Sifnos

Staying in Apollonia, the island’s capital, would be considered staying in the “busy area”. Although it is not nearly as busy as somewhere like Mykonos for a few days.
You’ll love the narrow winding streets, cute shops, and loverly tavernas.
Staying in Apollonia means you’re never too far from a delicious meal or a refreshing drink.
This is the ideal location for travelers looking to immerse themselves in the activities on their itinerary.
I also recommend Apollonia for anyone who is not planning to rent a car as you can easily take the bus or walk to the nearby town of Artemonas.
Apollonia Highlights:
- Local Dining: All the delicious food you can find in Apollonia definitely was a highlight for my visit to Sifnos. You will find traditional tavernas and modern restaurants.
- Art Galleries and Boutiques: Apollonia has the most art galleries and boutiques of all the nearby towns. It is the perfect place for finding unique souvenirs and gifts.
- Central Location: One of the best things about Apollonia is its central location. I found it to be the best base for exploring other parts of Sifnos.

The pace of life here is gentle, with days spent lounging by the sea and evenings enjoying fresh seafood at a beachside taverna.
Vathi’s charm lies in its simplicity and the warmth of its small community.

Kastro: A Walk Through History
Kastro, the former capital of Sifnos, is perched majestically on a cliff overlooking the Aegean Sea.
This ancient village, whose name translates to “castle,” is a living museum, with its narrow alleys and stone-built houses narrating tales of centuries past.
If you love getting into the whole Greek vibe, Kastro is the spot. It’s this really cool old place with a bunch of churches to check out, a museum all about Sifnos history, and streets that look just like they did hundreds of years ago.
History lovers, folks into some romance, or anyone who’s into old stuff will totally dig it. It’s super quiet and chill, so you can really relax and feel like you stepped back in time.
Plus, you can still hike around to see the rest of the island. And when you eat here, you get to munch on awesome Greek food in these little cozy places that have beautiful views of the ocean.
It’s all about good food, good sights, and great times.
Kastro Highlights:
- Art Galleries: Kastro is home to a number of small art galleries and studios where local artists display their work, ranging from paintings and sculptures to handmade jewelry and ceramics.
- Church of the Seven Martyrs: One of the most iconic sights in Kastro is the small church of the Seven Martyrs (Epta Martyres), situated on a rocky outcrop below the village, offering spectacular views of the sea.
- Archaeological Museum: The Archaeological Museum of Sifnos, located in Kastro, houses important artifacts from the island’s history, including pottery, sculptures, and remnants of ancient temples.
- Stunning Sea Views: Perched on a cliff overlooking the Aegean Sea, Kastro offers breathtaking panoramic views, especially at sunset, making it a photographer’s paradise.

Important Factors When Choosing A Neighborhood in Sifnos

Transportation
Public transportation on the Greek Island of Sifnos is rather limited to the KTEL bus system. While it is clean, comfortable, and efficient, the timetable is not all that convenient.
The bus service also doesn’t go to all the areas of the island, so staying somewhere secluded and relying on the bus isn’t possible.
If you plan to stay out of the main towns you really need to rent a car.
Mobility
Some areas to stay in Sifnos are not ideal for people with mobility challenges. Kastro specifically will be difficult to navigate due to its steep and uneven paths.
Kastro has numerous steps, steep inclines, and narrow walkways. This picturesque village retains much of its medieval charm, which unfortunately means accessibility is limited.
The streets are mostly cobblestoned, and the absence of ramps and elevators makes it challenging for those using wheelchairs or with other mobility issues.
Better areas to consider staying in areas are Apollonia or Kamares. Apollonia, the island’s capital, is more modern and flat, with easier access to amenities, shops, and restaurants.
Kamares, the port town, also offers a flatter landscape and is well-equipped with facilities that are more accommodating to those with mobility challenges.
Both locations serve as good bases to explore Sifnos, offering a range of accommodations and better infrastructure for accessibility.
When to Visit Sifnos & How to Get Here
The best time to visit Sifnos or any of the Cycladic Islands is between Mid May through Mid October. But the sweet spot is during September since the season will start to slow down and you will find better deals on everything.
Taking the ferry directly from Athens or a nearby island is really the only option. There is no official airport on Sifnos, but you could take a helicopter if you have the budget.
