Of those lesser-traveled Greek islands that some people wish would stay a secret, Koufonisia is high on the list. Known for its crystal-clear turquoise water and laid-back vibes, it’s been getting a lot of attention on Instagram as a “must-visit” island. But is it really?
Koufonisia (technically, Ano Koufonisi and Kato Koufonisi) is tucked deep in the Cyclades, and it’s not the easiest place to reach. So before you go planning a trip all the way out there, it’s best to know what to expect—because while it is beautiful, it might not be the right fit for every traveler.
Here’s the deal: Koufonisia is amazing, but only under certain conditions. If you’re looking for a lively atmosphere, buzzing nightlife, or a range of things to do, this is not your island.
It’s small, it’s quiet, and beyond the beaches, there’s not much to do. That’s why, for most travelers—including solo ones—I’d only recommend it as a day trip.
So, should you visit Koufonisia? That depends. If you’re after quiet, stunning beaches and don’t need nightlife or activities, then yes, Koufonisia is a dream. But if you’re craving variety, energy, or a buzzing social scene, you might find it too slow for a longer stay.
Here’s everything you should consider before deciding:

Pros & Cons of Visiting Koufonisia
Pros:
- Some of the clearest turquoise waters in Greece
- Laid-back, relaxing island vibes
- Perfect for a day trip from Naxos or other Cycladic islands
- Great for couples and beach lovers
Cons:
- Tiny island—beyond the beaches, there’s little to do
- No nightlife—if you’re looking for bars or clubs, this isn’t it
- Limited dining options—you won’t find a big foodie scene
- Can feel too quiet for solo travelers

Who Will Love Koufonisia?
I won’t lie—I loved Koufonisia, but only because I visited on a day trip. Granted, I was solo-traveling my way through the Greek Islands, and I would have been bored and lonely if I had stayed for days.
You will absolutely love Koufonisia if you’re looking for a total reset and a chance to disconnect from the world. All that’s on the menu here is relaxing and unwinding. And honestly? There ain’t nothing wrong with that!
So if you’re a couple, a family, or even a solo traveler looking for a quiet, romantic, and secluded place, Koufonisia is your island!

Why You Might Want to Skip Koufonisia
As I already mentioned, solo travelers might find this island a bit too secluded for more than an afternoon or, at most, a day.
Couples who want a bit more of a social scene or a wider selection of restaurants may also want to think twice—Koufonisia isn’t exactly a foodie destination.
And if you consider yourself an adventure seeker? Besides the beaches, there’s really not much else to do. No big hikes, no major sights—just beach, eat, repeat.

How Many Days Do You Need in Koufonisia?
- Best option: A day trip – You’ll see the best beaches, enjoy the vibe, and leave before getting bored.
- Short stay (1-2 nights) – If you really want to slow down and unwind.
- Long stay (3+ nights) – Only if you’re 100% sure you want a super quiet, slow-paced getaway.
For 90% of travelers, a day trip to Koufonisia is the way to go! And luckily, there are plenty of ways to visit from larger islands like Naxos.
But if you are committed to spending a night on this idyllic island, I would recommend two nights—just enough time for a couple of days of pure relaxation.
If you feel like you’re part of the 10% who love sleepy, secluded islands, then by all means, stay as long as you like!

Koufonisia FAQ: Quick Answers for Travelers
- Is Koufonisia expensive? If you’re traveling with others, you can manage on €50-60/day. Solo travelers should budget €70-80/day. This is a mid-range estimate, not luxury or backpacker pricing.
- Do you need a car in Koufonisia? No, the island is tiny and walkable. You can reach most beaches on foot or by boat taxi.
- Are there ATMs in Koufonisia? Yes, but there are only one or two ATMs, and they sometimes run out of cash. Bring enough euros, especially in peak season.
- Is Koufonisia crowded? In July and August, yes—especially with Greek tourists. May, June, and September are ideal for fewer crowds and good weather.
How to Get to Koufonisia
Since getting to Koufonisia takes a bit of time, you want to be really sure it’s worth the effort. That’s why I really recommend it as a day trip from a bigger island.
- There is no airport – The closest airport is on Naxos (this is the fastest way to get here).
- From Athens – Take a ferry from Piraeus to Naxos, then another ferry to Koufonisia.
- From other islands – The easiest route is from Naxos (1-hour ferry), but there are also connections from Paros, Mykonos, and Santorini.
- Total travel time – 5+ hours from Athens, depending on ferry schedules.

Final Verdict: Should You Visit Koufonisia?
Yes—but only if you know what you’re getting into. If you love beaches and want a peaceful escape, it’s a dream.
But if you crave variety, energy, or socializing, you’re better off making it a quick stop rather than your main destination.
