If you’re looking for a slower-paced, more authentic, and less-traveled Greek island, you might find yourself choosing between Folegandros and Serifos—two Cycladic islands that I still consider “hidden gems.”
While you likely can’t go wrong with either, they do have key differences worth considering, and that’s the focus of this post.
Having spent time on both islands, I want to share a true comparison to help you make a more informed decision when choosing the perfect Greek island this summer.

Serifos vs. Folegandros: Is One Island Better Than The Other?
Truthfully, I do have a slight preference for one of these islands—but that’s based on my personal travel style, which may or may not align with yours.
Rather than giving you my opinion upfront, I want to walk you through a full comparison of the islands so you can decide for yourself.
After exploring 17 Greek islands over the years, I can honestly say I’ve never found one I didn’t like. But some are definitely easier to navigate, especially for solo travelers.
So, let’s dive in and find out which island is the best fit for you!

Folegandros or Serifos: Which Island is Easier to Reach?
If you’re starting in Athens, Serifos is the more convenient option. Since neither island has an airport, the ferry is your only choice.
Folegandros is approximately 3 hours and 45 minutes from Athens by ferry, while Serifos is just 2 hours away. If you’re short on time, this is definitely something to consider.
Leaving from Athens, you are leaving from the main port, Piraeus port, and I suggest you leave Athens city center an hour and 45 minutes before your ferry departs.
The traffic in the summer might shock you, even at 6:30 am in peak season. Better to be early than miss that damn ferry; it almost happened to me!
Ferry Information
I always recommend using Ferry Hopper when booking ferries to Serifos and Folegandros. The app is incredibly user-friendly and has always provided reliable service in my experience.
If you are looking for transportation options at the port, you will find buses or taxis, although there are not a lot of taxis on either island. Most hotels offer a pick-up service at the port, which is helpful.
The bus schedules can be found here:
*Tickets are approximately €2 and you need cash
Which is Better for a Day Trip: Serifos or Folegandros?
In my opinion, neither Serifos nor Folegandros is ideal for a day trip.
That said, visiting Serifos for the day is technically possible. The first ferry out leaves around 8 AM, and the last ferry back to Athens departs around 6 PM (during peak season).
However, given the cost of a round-trip ticket, it may not be worth it for just seven hours of exploring.
Folegandros, on the other hand, is completely out of the question for a day trip. The ferry schedule makes visiting and returning within the same day impractical.

What Makes Folegandros Better Than Serifos?
Fewer Tourists
Folegandros’s main advantage over Serifos is that it’s slightly less traveled.
While neither island is considered a major tourist hotspot, Folegandros sees fewer visitors than Serifos. Its more remote location, being farther from Athens, is likely a key reason for this.
If you’re looking for a quieter, more untouched Greek island experience, Folegandros might be the better choice.

What Makes Serifos Better Than Folegandros?
In my opinion, Serifos is the more walkable and easier-to-navigate island.
What I love about Serifos is that from the port, you can walk to some of the island’s best beaches and enjoy waterfront restaurants and shops.
While the Chora (main town) is accessible by bus, you can also hike up to it—a great activity for those who enjoy scenic walks.
In contrast, on Folegandros, getting to the Chora typically requires taking transit, making Serifos a more convenient option for travelers who prefer to explore on foot.

Reasons to Choose Serifos Over Folegandros
You Want Easy Access to Beaches
In my experience, getting to the beaches in Serifos was much easier than in Folegandros—especially if you don’t rent a car (which I didn’t).
When it comes to where to stay in Serifos, I recommend staying near the port. This way you can walk to several beaches or even stay at a beach campsite.
In contrast, the port area in Folegandros does have a beach, but it’s nothing special. While there is an amazing beach on Folegandros, you’ll need to take a bus to get there—and personally, I don’t love being tied to a bus schedule.

You Love Hiking
Serifos is known for its epic hiking trails! While I only had the chance to try a couple, I can say that the hike from the port to the Chora is WELL worth the effort.
The reward? Arriving at the most charming, whitewashed village with breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea.
Which Island Has Better Restaurants?
When it comes to food, Folegandros wins. I fell in love with a couple of incredible eateries there.
However, Serifos has better views from its port-side restaurants—so if you enjoy dining with a sea view, you might prefer Serifos.
That said, both islands have friendly locals working in their restaurants, which made the experience even better. Here are a few of my favorite restaurants on both islands:

Folegandros Restaurants:
Serifos Restaurants:
- Lepi Lepi
- Anxinos-Serifos
- Chill & Co (Brunch)
Do You Need to Rent a Car on Serifos or Folegandros?
For most travelers, renting a car isn’t necessary on either island. Unlike Milos—where you definitely need a car to visit major attractions and fishing villages—both Serifos and Folegandros have buses that take you to the key spots.
However, renting a car on either island is an excellent option if you’re looking for a more remote and off-the-beaten-path experience.

Rent A Car
Renting a car on the Greek Islans has been way more reasonable than in other cities in Europe. I like using Discover Cars because they make it easy to find the best prices and reviews.
How Many Days Do You Need on Either Island?
To fully explore the major attractions on either island, I recommend spending two full days and nights. This gives you enough time to visit both the main towns and the most famous beaches.
Of course, if you’re looking for a more relaxed vacation, you can easily stay longer and soak in the slow island life.
But if you just want a quick taste of each island before moving on, two nights should be enough.

Which Island Has Better Nightlife?
I found the Chora in Serifos to have a livelier scene than Folegandros. However, neither island is known for nightlife—especially when compared to places like Mykonos.
Both islands have small bars that serve cocktails and play music, creating a relaxed evening atmosphere. But if you’re looking for beach clubs or all-night parties, neither Serifos nor Folegandros will be the right fit.
So, Which Island is Truly Better?
For me, the winner is Serifos—but that’s not to say I didn’t love Folegandros or wouldn’t go back. I simply prefer Serifos for its convenience (being closer to Athens), its easier access to major attractions, its beautiful sandy beaches, and its friendly locals.
That said, you really can’t go wrong with either island.
Choose Serifos if you want easy access to beaches, a more walkable island, and a slightly livelier atmosphere in the Chora. Plus, you can visit Sifnos, one of the best islands for foodies!
Serifos is also the better choice if you prefer shorter travel times from Athens and enjoy hiking with rewarding views.
Choose Folegandros if you’re looking for a quieter, less-traveled island with a more traditional village feel.
It’s ideal for those who want a slower pace, charming local shops, and fewer tourists. If you don’t mind taking a bus to explore, Folegandros offers breathtaking cliffside scenery and hidden beaches worth the trip.
