After my recent visit to the largest Greek Island, I will be able to help you confidently choose which area of the island is best for you!
Since it’s the biggest Greek Island there will be lots to consider. But, the good news when visiting an island such as Crete is that you have a lot to choose from in terms of areas.
For me, the Chania region is where I spent the bulk of my time on the island.
If you are looking for an action-packed vacation, I highly recommend basing yourself central like Heraklion or Chania, and making day trips all around the island!

Where Is the Island of Crete Located?
Crete is located in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, southeast of mainland Greece.
The fastest way to reach Crete from Athens is to fly. However, another great way to go from Athens to Crete is by Ferry.
If you are island hopping, one of the most popular and closest islands to Crete is Santorini.
When I visited Crete I flew from Athens into Chania where I began my adventure.

The Four Regions of Crete
Crete, the largest of the Greek islands, boasts a diverse landscape and a rich history that has left its mark on the island’s four distinct regions.
Each region offers unique characteristics that attract visitors from all around the world.
Chania (Picturesque & Authentic)
Starting in the north where I spent most of my time is the Chania region.
The best part of Crete to stay in is Chanina Old Town, with its picturesque Venetian harbor, narrow streets, and colorful architecture, reflecting the island’s past influences. Chania is also known to have some of the best restaurants in Crete.
The surrounding region encompasses breathtaking gorges like Samaria and Imbros, perfect for adventurous hikers seeking jaw-dropping vistas.
Olive groves and vineyards dot the countryside, producing some of Crete’s finest olive oil and wines.
