Navigation & Transit Apps
Google Maps
It’s probably no shock that my top essential app is Google Maps. I mainly use it for getting to and from the destination.
I have often experienced that the app might not have updated operational hours. For example, the Greek islands close mostly in winter, but if the establishment doesn’t manually update it, it could appear open when its not…
Make sure to download the offline maps, especially when in the Greek Islands.
If you’re planning to visit any cities covered in my destination guides for Greece, you’ll find I’ve already pinned maps with my favorite spots, ready for you to explore.
These maps will download directly into your phone! iphone or Android
Additional Navigation Apps to Consider:
📲 Maps.ME – MAPS.ME stands out for its offline features, making it a must-have for travelers who can’t always rely on internet access. With its detailed maps available for download, including attractions, hiking paths, and more, it’s an ideal tool for those seeking adventures off the beaten path.
OASA Telematics
I found OASA Telematics incredibly useful for navigating Athens’ public transportation system.
Use it for real-time updates, routes, and schedules for buses, trolleys, and the metro.
This app made it easy for me to catch buses and plan my day visiting places in Athens.
It helped me move around the city easily and without any problems.
If you’re on the lookout for budget tips in Athens, using public transit is a great way to keep your costs down.
You can also use an app to pay for public transport in Athens if you have a rechargeable Ath.ena card. Simply download the “Ath.ena Card” app to get started. I recommend just buying a 3-Day Tourist Ticket (€20) at a ticket machine instead.
📲 Download the Athena Ticket Scanner App for Android -The Athena Ticket Scanner app conveniently shows details of all OASA tickets directly on your mobile device. This includes information such as remaining trips and time.
Free Now
While you can use UBER in Greece, the locals prefer using Free Now! I have used both Uber in Free Now when I was living in Greece.
I noticed the prices were better on Free Now and there was more availability for rides.
The traffic is quite horrible in Athens, so you need to brace yourself for a wait.
🏝️ When visiting smaller Greek Islands there is often NO RIDE SHARING apps.
I’ve observed that ride-sharing apps are starting to become available on the larger and more populated Greek Islands. iPhone or Android
📲 If you are traveling to Mykonos & Paros, then you need to download iMove! It is an app that is only operating in these islands for now. I hope more islands start to use it soon!
Personal Safety Apps
MayDay Safety
Traveling in Greece is perfectly safe! However, you never know when you could find yourself needing to get attention for help.
For that extra layer of safety, installing a personal safety app like May Day on your phone is a wise move.
May Day enables you to send automatic alerts about your location to chosen contacts, offering peace of mind during your Greek adventures.
Additional Safety Apps to Consider:
- bSafe– This app includes a variety of safety features, such as voice activation to send alerts, live location sharing, and a video recording function that automatically starts when an SOS is activated. It can also simulate phone calls to help get you out of uncomfortable situations and alert your chosen contacts when you need help.
Travel Organizations & Tours
Tripit
I really like using Tripit because it keeps all my travel plans in one spot.
It’s super handy to have everything from plane tickets to hotel info right on my phone. I don’t need to worry about losing papers or emails.
The best part is, it even works without internet, so I can check my plans anywhere.
Tripit also gives me cool ideas for things to do that I hadn’t thought of.
It’s made traveling a lot easier and more fun for me.
Get Your Guide
I’ve found Get Your Guide to be incredibly helpful for my day trips in Greece.
It’s great because it shows me all kinds of tours and activities that I can do, all in one app.
I don’t have to search the internet for hours to find cool things to see and do.
Plus, I can book everything right there on my phone, which saves me a lot of time.
It even has reviews, so I can see what other people thought before I decide.
Additional Travel Planning Apps to Consider:
- Viator- Though Get Your Guide is more popular in Greece, Viator is another fantastic option to consider for booking tours and activities during your travels.
Ferry Apps
Ferry Hopper
I always use Ferryhopper when I need to book ferry tickets and check schedules.
It’s the best app for ferries in Greece because it tells you exactly where your ferry is in real time.
It’s super handy for planning your trip and knowing when your ferry will arrive.
I also use Ferry Hooper when I plan my itinerary routes in Greece.
Marine Traffic
If you didn’t book your ferry tickets with an app that has tracking, it’s a good idea to have Marine Traffic on hand.
It’s great for keeping an eye on ships and boats nearby in real-time, helping you stay informed and safe on the water.
And sorry to be the one to tell you this, but oftentimes the ferries are late returning from the Greek Islands.
Internet Services
WiFi Finder + Map
During my trip to Greece, having a WiFi finder app was super helpful.
It made it easy to find internet hotspots, so I could stay connected wherever I went.
Whether I was exploring the city or chilling on the beach, it made my trip a lot smoother.
Bonus! It’s Free!
Language Apps
Google Translate
While it’s true that many Greeks know some English, you may encounter less fluency, especially among older generations and outside of tourist hubs!
I found that 50% of taxi drivers could understand English, so it was helpful to have Google Translate downloaded.
To make the most of this app, it’s essential to download a Greek keyboard on your phone for typing symbols.
If you forget, don’t fret; the app offers a convenient feature allowing you to hover your camera over words for translation.
For this reason, it’s wise to have Google Translate installed on your phone beforehand.
Currency App
XE Currency
For me, having a currency app is essential, especially since my home currency isn’t euros like in Greece.
It’s incredibly handy for quickly converting prices and understanding how much things cost in my own currency.
This helps me budget and make spending decisions while exploring Greece with ease.
Plus, it ensures that I always have a clear understanding of the value of the money I’m spending, making my travels in Greece even more enjoyable and stress-free.
Weather Apps
Windy
Having the Windy app on my phone is a lifesaver for my Mykonos trip, especially with the infamous Meltemi wind that can cause ferry cancellations.
This wind, known for its strength, can disrupt travel plans, affecting ferry schedules and even catamaran tours.
With Windy, I can track the wind forecast up to 5 days in advance, helping me anticipate disruptions and plan accordingly.
Plus, it’s handy for choosing which direction to head—typically south or southwest—to enjoy the calmer beaches and towns on the islands.
Solo Traveler Apps
Nomad Her
If you are traveling alone to Greece, the solitude can sometimes become monotonous. That’s why I often seek the company of fellow female travelers for dinner or a day tour to add a new dimension to my adventures.
If you’re like me, craving companionship during solo travels, check out Nomad Her!
It’s an exclusive app for women travelers, offering connections with like-minded individuals. While it’s still gaining traction and might not be as helpful in remote destinations just yet, it holds the promise of finding travel companions anywhere as its user base expands.
