Traveling to the Greek capital and desperate to know where the best cafes in Athens are? Well, you are in luck! A good cup of coffee is like my lifeline, so I took finding all the best cafes very seriously!
As someone who’s had the privilege to call Athens home for a number of months, I’ve made it my mission to see out each coffee house worthy enough to be called “best”.
In this post, I will reveal where you can find the best coffee in the city, organized by neighborhood!
But that’s not all! If you identify as a digital nomad and writer like myself, I’ll be noting which cafes are laptop-friendly and conducive to work.
Because let’s face it, a cafe that offers the perfect blend of good coffee, comfort, and Wi-Fi is an urban sanctuary we all need.

Traditional Greek Coffee & Popular Drinks
Greeks love their coffee and the culture has been intertwined with both tradition and evolution.
1. Traditional Greek Coffee: Slowly brewed over a flame in a special pot known as a ‘briki,’ this drink is emblematic of Greek heritage. It is for the true coffee lover.
The best way to describe it is rich, thick, and unfiltered. each sip If you want to sweeten it up, you can order it as ‘sketos’ (unsweetened), ‘metrios’ (medium), or ‘glykos’ (sweet).
2. Frappé: Introduced in the 1950s and emblematic of Greek summers, the Frappé is a frothy blend of instant coffee, sugar, and water. It is STRONG, and for me, it’s too bitter.
But hardcore coffee lovers seem to be obsessed. You can get it served over ice, swirled with milk for those who prefer a creamier undertone.
3. Freddo Espresso & Freddo Cappuccino: Strong coffee lovers can perk up to the Freddo Espresso & Freddo Cappunion.
In the Greek coffee scene, these cold brews capture the zeitgeist of contemporary Athens. The Freddo Espresso is a straight shot of chilled coffee over ice, whereas the Freddo Cappuccino adds a crown of cold, airy foam on top. In the summer this is the most popular coffee drink among the Greeks.
4. Galaktoboureko Latte: Venturing beyond tradition, this fusion drink combines the flavors of a beloved Greek dessert with the richness of coffee. Notes of syrupy custard and crispy phyllo make it an indulgent choice for dessert aficionados.
Final Thoughts: Best Cafes in Athens
I hoped my guide not only helped you discover cafes with the best brews but also got a local’s perspective on the unique ambiance each neighborhood offers.
