How do I know? Mykonos was the first Greek Island I ever visited and it was a solo trip! Having visited twice, I gathered all the best tips and crafted this ultimate female solo travel guide to Mykonos!

The purpose of this solo travel guide to Mykonos is to provide you with all the information you will need to make it a smooth trip.

As a solo travel expert to the Greek Islands, I want you to avoid any travel mishaps that I encountered in my first years of traveling by myself.

Some of my biggest travel mistakes could have been avoided had I made more of an effort to research my accommodations, transportation, and time at each destination.

Solo Female Travel Essentials For Mykonos

When packing for Greece, I will start with the obvious essentials, such as sunblock and a hat. Nothing is worse on vacation than sunburns and sun poisoning. Also, make sure you bring quality products!

I am also about natural and eco-friendly brands that are good for the planet as well as the person using them.

Since living in Greece for months I have been able to visit over 17 Greek Islands! The essentials I needed on every island were:

What is Mykonos Known For?

Mykonos, a gem among the Western Cycladic Greek islands, is known most famously for its vibrant nightlife and beautiful beaches.

The nightlife in Mykonos rivals the Spanish island of Ibiza. Each country believes it holds the title of best party island in Europe.

But Mykonos is not just a party mecca; you can enjoy Mykonos if you are looking for more of a relaxed trip.

The island’s old town (Mykonos Town) has some of the most charming streets with Taverns that align with the sea.

Here you can explore the old narrow and winding streets, hit some of the local shops, and take pictures by the iconic windmills. You will also find great restaurants, perfect for foodies!

And of course, beach lovers will be happy they came! Mykonos has some of the most beautiful beaches, but more on that later.

Where is Mykonos Located?

Mykonos is located in the Aegean Sea in an island cluster known as the Cycladic Islands. By ferry, you are about 2 and a half hours away from Athens.

The most known neighboring islands include Naxos, Syros, Santorini, Paros, and Milos.

The Best Way to Get to Mykonos

There are a couple of ways to get to Mykonos, and the best way depends on your travel plans.

If you are planning to spend a couple of days in Athens, then your best bet is to take the ferry.

The airport in Athens isn’t exactly close to the city center of Athens. So unless the flight is that much cheaper than the ferry, I would suggest you take the ferry.

From the city center of Athens, you can get to Piraeus port in about 25 minutes if there is no traffic via taxi. There is also a train to the port which is very convenient if you feel confident using transit when you are solo in Athens.

If you would rather skip sightseeing in Athens, then I would suggest you try and fly directly into the Mykonos International Airport.

If no flights are available to Mykonos, you could always fly to a nearby island like Milos, and then island hop.

The Greek Islands are incredible for solo travel!

Is Mykonos Island Safe For Solo Female Travelers

Is it safe to travel to Mykonos? Safety is my NUMBER 1 concern when I travel alone, so I can confidently say that you will feel safe alone in Mykonos.

I walked alone at night my whole trip. The only thing you want to be conscious of is if you are walking on dark roads at night to look out for cars.

Even though I felt safe, I do believe it’s important you do your own research. Practice any common sense safety you would in your own city.

Keep a close eye on your belongings and in general, don’t do things to draw unwanted attention to yourself.

What is the Best Way to Get Around Mykonos?

The best way to get around Mykonos will depend on your travel goals on this solo trip.

If you are only coming to Mykonos for a couple of days and want to see the old town and the beach you could get by by walking on foot and taking the public bus.

This will also depend on where you choose to stay on the island. Staying within walking distance of Mykonos town would be my top recommendation for solo travelers to Mykonos.

If you are visiting the island for a little longer and want to really see some of the secluded beaches, you will need a car. The buses don’t go to all the beaches and taxis are hard to get.

Bus

The bus system in Mykonos is pretty good! I used the bus to go from the port to the area of my hotel, and again on a solo trip to the best beaches in Mykonos!

Water Taxi

In addition to the buses, there are water taxis! I took a water taxi to 5 of the best beaches in Mykonos! From Mykonos Town, you will take the bus from the Fabrica station to Orinos Beach.

There is a water taxi ticket stand where you can purchase an all-day water taxi ticket for 20€. You can purchase with a credit card which I appreciate.

Below is a picture of the schedule, but note I visited at the end of September. The boat runs longer into the evening in the peak summer season.

Should I Rent A Car in Mykonos?

Renting a car in Mykonos will give you total freedom to explore the whole island. Whether you should rent a car in Mykonos will depend on whether you want to explore more of the far-out secluded parts of the island.

The public transport on the island is limited and the taxis are even more limited, so if you want the ability to go wherever you want, rent a car.

Driving in Mykonos is fairly easy, as it is not all that busy. If you are looking for a car rental company I trust, use Discover Cars.

Is There Uber in Mykonos?

Technically there is Uber in Mykonos, but it’s very expensive and VERY limited. In fact, there is a LIMITED number of taxi cabs on the island.

As of 2023, there are only 32 taxis on the whole island. And you can’t reserve them ahead, so it’s very difficult to use them.

Solo Traveler Tip: Don’t rely on Uber or taxis in Mykonos to be your go-to transport.

Is Public Transport in Mykonos Safe For Solo Travelers?

Public transit is safe in Mykonos! You will be surrounded by travelers just like yourself all hoping to experience the best that Mykonos has to offer.

Tips for Solo Travelers in Mykonos

1. Safety First: While Mykonos is generally considered safe for solo female travelers, stay vigilant, especially during the night. Familiarize yourself with the main town and your accommodation area. If unsure about any location, you can always check platforms like “Mykonos solo travel Reddit” for recent experiences and advice from fellow solo travelers.
2. Explore Beyond the Main Town: While Mykonos Town is a must-visit of its iconic spots, don’t miss out on exploring other parts of the island. Consider taking a day trip to the archaeological sites on Delos!
3. Connect with Other Travelers: Mykonos is a popular destination, and there are plenty of opportunities to make new friends. My best advice for solo travelers is to consider joining a group guided tour.
4. Utilize Efficient Transportation: Mykonos offers various modes of transportation. Map out your day ahead of time!
5. Book Everything in Advance: Travel to Mykonos is extremely popular! That means things like tours, hotels, and restaurants will absolutely be booked out far in advance. I booked my hotels in Mykonos in March for a travel date at the end of September.

How many days do you really need in Mykonos?

When traveling solo in Mykonos you might be wondering how long you should spend on the island.

Assuming you want to do a little island hopping, I recommend that you spend at least 2 nights in Mykonos before moving on.

This would mean you can arrive in Mykonos sometime in the morning on your first day and leave sometime in the afternoon on the third day there.

It will give you a great taste of what Mykonos has to offer. If you only want to spend time on 1 island, and love the beach then stay as long as you can!

Best Time to Visit Mykonos Alone

If you are wondering what the best time to travel to Mykonos is, then I would say September. The last 2 weeks of September if you can make that work.

When traveling at the end of the busy travel season in Mykonos you will ensure you will get better deals on everything.

I found that my hotel was about 20% cheaper than during peak season and I scored some great deals at some of the local clothing shops!

The only risk you take with traveling at the end of September is the weather. I enjoyed the straight sun and temperatures of 80 + Fahrenheit.

Mykonos Best Beaches Guide

Planning to be solo in Mykonos to get some sun? I’m with you! There was nothing better than laying at the Super Paradise beach club for a day of relaxation by myself!

There are some different beaches all over the island of Mykonos. Unfortunately, they are not walkable from the Mykonos town where I stayed.

The bus does take you there in around 10-12 minutes so it’s no big deal. I would rather stay in the lively area and take a bus to the more secluded beach areas than stay in the quiet areas.

That’s just me though!

Paradise Beach: The Party Destination

The name says it all. This is the hotspot for party-lovers! With its pulsating beach bars and vibrant atmosphere, it’s a must-visit.

But if you’re like me and sometimes want a quiet moment, head there early in the morning. The sunrises? Breathtaking! Make a reservation online.

Elia Beach: The Chill Spot

This one’s a bit more laid-back. It’s spacious, offers a variety of water sports, and has some fantastic restaurants right on the shore.

I had one of the best seafood platters here!

Psarou Beach: The Bougie Beach

Looking for a mix of luxury and relaxation? Psarou is where it’s at. The loungers might be a bit pricey, but the serene environment and top-notch service make it worth every penny.

Agios Sostis: The Secluded One

Now, if you’re after something more secluded, this is your beach. It’s a bit of a hidden gem, so not many tourists around. To get here, you do need to rent a car.

Perfect for those solo moments with a book in hand and the sound of waves as your background music.

When it comes to eating in restaurants in Mykonos, it can be expensive. I highly recommend you have a look at the recommended restaurants in my travel guide ahead of time.

Some entrees start at 30€ and go up from there. But don’t worry, I found some VERY reasonable and delicious restaurants in Mykonos, great for solo dining.

Regretia – Little Venice

I loved Regretia the most of all the bars in Little Venice! The drinks were more reasonably priced than some of the neighboring bars. The view is spectacular!

180° Sunset Bar

Visiting 180° Sunset Bar is truly an experience like no other! It is not exactly cheap, but worth the money, I promise!

You will definitely need to make reservations in advance which can be done online!

The Best Area to Stay Solo in Mykonos

Looking for where to stay solo in Mykonos? Below is an overview of the areas to stay in Mykonos.

My advice is to be close to Mykonos Town within a 10-15 minute walk. I always stay just outside the center of the old town.

Mykonos Town (Chora)

• Location: Proximate to both the main port and airport, providing convenience for solo travelers.
• Pros:
  • Central hub with numerous tavernas, shops, and nightclubs.
  • Direct access to historical sites and sightseeing tour options.
  • A perfect display of local culture with a variety of boutique accommodations.
• Cons:
  • Potentially crowded during peak seasons.
  • Might be noisy at night due to its vibrant nightlife.

Platis Gialos

• Location: Southeast of Mykonos Town, it’s a short drive from both the main port and airport.
• Pros:
  • A renowned beach ideal for sunbathing and water sports.
  • Friendly beach bars and restaurants along the shoreline.
  • You can find private villas and quality resorts.
• Cons:
  • It’s on the pricier side.
  • Will be busy and bustling during peak tourist times.

Ornos

• Location: Southwest of Mykonos Town, it’s a 10-minute drive to the airport and a 15-minute drive from the main port.
• Pros:
  • Known as a family-friendly beach with shallow waters, you might find more kids in this area.
  • Active day and nightlife with a mix of restaurants and bars.
  • Offers a range of accommodations, from budget stays to luxury resorts.
• Cons:
  • Can become particularly crowded, especially in high season.
  • Beach space may be limited during peak hours.

Agios Ioannis

• Location: Located on the southwestern tip of Mykonos, it’s a bit further from the airport, but only 15 minutes, and to the main port it is a 20-minute drive.
• Pros:
  • Offers a more tranquil beach experience, less crowded than its counterparts.
  • Known for stunning sunset views and proximity to the historic island of Delos.
  • A mix of luxury villas and traditional accommodations is available.
• Cons:
  • Fewer dining and nightlife options compared to busier areas.
  • Might require renting a vehicle or relying on public transportation to explore other parts of the island.

How to Budget for Solo Travel in Mykonos

There is no getting around it, Mykonos is expensive. More expensive than I was expecting.

For solo female travelers who are travel budget-conscious, you are going to want to plan your spending so you don’t blow all your money one day on the beach.

Where to travel next from Mykonos?

If you are planning to extend your Greece trip from Mykonos there are affordable islands nearby, I have visited a few!

Some of the best places near Mykonos include Santorini, Milos, Sifnos, and Naxos! If you choose the island of Santorini, you must visit the town of Oia!

If you want to visit the Dodecanese islands, I would recommend Rhodes for solo female travellers!
