Ah, Milos. It’s one of the Greek islands everyone is adding to their bucket list right now, and for good reason. But getting around Milos isn’t as simple as people expect.

The island is spread out, beaches are not walkable from town to town, and public transportation is limited. If you do not plan ahead, it is easy to waste time or miss some of the best spots.

In this guide, I break down exactly how to get around Milos, when you actually need a rental car, when the bus works, and where to stay if you are short on time, all based on my own experience traveling the island.

How to Get to Milos

The best way to get to Milos from Athens city center is to take the ferry.

Most likely, you’ll be leaving from the Port of Piraeus, the main port in Athens, and the trip takes 3 to 7 hours depending on sea conditions and the type of ferry you take. 

If you decide to take a ferry route from mainland Greece, be sure to always check the ferry tickets and ferry schedules well in advance.

If boat travel isn’t for you, you can always catch a direct flight from the Athens International Airport. During the peak season, they will have daily flights, and it’s a 40-minute trip.

What is the Best Way to Get Around in Milos? 

Because the island is so big, and not yet well connected with many transit options, it is best to have a car. I can’t stress this enough.

There are public transportation bus options, but they lack frequency.

It’s recommended that you book your rental car in advance because, like it or not, Milos is gaining popularity.

Check with the rental companies to find the best prices.

If you’re not an EU citizen, you may need an International Drivers License.

Having your own vehicle will give you access to the entire island and you’ll be able to go at your own pace. 

That means extra time for a full day at the beach or adding in a fun boat tour or sailing trip.

Milos is much larger than it looks on a map. You cannot walk between the main bases on the island, and even short drives add up if you are relying on buses or taxis.

Let’s look at all the ways to travel around Milos!

Getting Around Milos By Foot: 

The main areas in Milos are the Adamas Port, Polonia, and Plaka. There are many smaller areas such as Klima, but I missed out on it because I didn’t have a rental car. 

If you are in any of these main areas, getting around on foot is easy; most things are within walking distance. But getting from Plaka to Polonia is not a short walk. It’s not possible on foot. 

The distance between Plaka and Polonia is: 10 km or 6 miles, a typical car journey takes 15-20 minutes. 

Using The Milos Public Bus:

Milos has a public bus; the main station is at the Port of Adamantas. The bus schedule is conveniently posted right at the bus stop. 

I recommend downloading the bus schedule on your phone. You can download my free Google Map with all the locations pinned in the post for quick access. 

The bus is a good, safe option that costs around 2 euros. It’s great for budget travelers, but the bus schedule has limited hours of operation. The route timetable varies by month/week.

Also, depending on the route, it doesn’t run frequently enough, in my experience. 

For example, if you want to do a photo shoot at the popular Sarakiniko Beach at sunrise, you need a car. The earliest bus is at 10:10.

For reference, the bus does go to popular spots like Sarakiniko Beach, Fyriplaka Beach, Paliochori Beach, and Papafragus Beach.

What You Need To Know About Car Rentals & Quad Bikes

For most travelers, renting a car is the easiest way to get around Milos.

A small car is your best option. Roads are narrow, some are unpaved, and parking can be tight in popular areas.

Having a car gives you:

• Easy access to beaches that are hard to reach by bus
• The ability to visit multiple beaches in one day
• Flexibility for early mornings and sunsets
• Less time waiting around or coordinating taxis

Rental cars typically cost €50 to €60 per day in high season. While that can feel expensive at first, it usually costs less than relying on taxis, which are limited and add up quickly.

Quad Bikes in Milos

If you want a cheaper and more adventurous option, quad bikes are common on the island.

Quad bikes usually cost around €30 per day and can be fun for short distances or beach hopping. They work best if you are comfortable riding one and do not plan to cover long distances.

That said, roads can be steep, windy, and dusty, so a car is still the more comfortable and practical option for most travelers.

Pros and Cons of Renting a Car in Milos

If you are on the fence about renting a car in Milos, here is the honest tradeoff.

Pros

• You control your schedule. You are not planning your day around the bus timetable.
• You can actually beach hop. Milos is not a one-beach-per-day island if you have a car.
• You can go early or late. Sarakiniko at sunrise and sunset spots are much easier with your own wheels.

Cons

• The roads can be annoying. Some are narrow, steep, or unpaved, and parking in busy areas can be a pain.
• It adds cost. Between the rental, fuel, and insurance, it is a real budget line item, especially for solo travelers.

If renting a car feels like too much, your best alternative is staying in Adamas and using the bus for a few key routes, then booking one island tour or boat tour for everything else.

Do You Need a Guided Tour to Get Around Milos?

If you are short on time, not renting a car, or simply do not want to deal with driving, a guided tour is one of the easiest ways to see more of Milos in a single day.

Tours work especially well if:

• You want to see multiple beaches without coordinating schedules
• You are only in Milos for 1 to 3 days
• You are staying near the port and relying on the bus

Best Tours in Milos

• Milos Bike Tour– A good option if you want something active and are staying near Adamas.
• Milos Island Tour By Car– Ideal if you want a broad overview of the island without renting your own car.
• Milos Boat Trip Tour– One of the best ways to see sea caves and coastal areas that are not accessible by road.
• Milos Private Tour with Hotel Pick-Up– Best if you want a relaxed pace or do not want to plan logistics at all.

Are Taxis Reliable in Milos?

Taxis in Milos are limited and expensive, and they should not be your main transportation plan.

There are not many taxis on the island, and waits of 20 to 30 minutes are common, especially in the evening. In my experience, I waited around 30 minutes to get picked up after dinner.

Your hotel can usually share phone numbers for reliable taxi drivers, but availability is not guaranteed.

You should also plan to pay in cash, as many taxis do not accept credit cards.

Is There Uber in Milos?

No. There is no Uber or taxi app in Milos.

The only way to get a taxi is to call or message drivers directly, usually via WhatsApp. This is another reason taxis work better as a backup option rather than a primary way to get around the island.

Final Thoughts on Getting Around in Milos

Getting around Milos comes down to one main decision: how much flexibility you want.

If you plan to visit multiple beaches, catch early mornings or sunsets, or explore smaller villages, renting a car will make your trip far easier. If you are staying near the port and are comfortable planning around bus schedules, you can get by without one, especially on a shorter trip.
