Getting around to all the best places in Milos can be a challenge for the ill-prepared.

How to Get to Milos

The best way to get to Milos from Athens city center is to take the ferry.

Most likely, you’ll be leaving from the Port of Piraeus, the main port in Athens, and the trip takes 3 to 7 hours depending on sea conditions and the type of ferry you take. 

If you decide to take a ferry route from mainland Greece, be sure to always check the ferry tickets and ferry schedules well in advance.

If boat travel isn’t for you, you can always catch a direct flight from the Athens International Airport. During the peak season, they will have daily flights, and it’s a 40-minute trip.

No matter how you decide to arrive at this gorgeous Cyclades Island, incredible treasures and secret hidden gems await you.

What is the Best Way to Get Around in Milos? 

Because the island is so big, and not yet well connected with many transit options it is best to have a car. I can’t stress this enough.

There are public transportation bus options, but they lack frequency.

It’s recommended that you book your rental car in advance because like it or not, Milos is gaining popularity.

Check with the rental companies to shop around for the best prices.

If you’re not an EU citizen you may need an International Drivers License.

Having your own vehicle will give you access to the entire island and you’ll be able to go at your own pace. 

That means extra time for a full day at the beach or adding in a fun boat tour or sailing trip.

Comparing Different Transit Options in Milos

Milos is 160 square kilometers or 62 square miles, and you can get around the island a few ways.

Let’s look all the ways to travel around Milos!

By Foot: 

The main areas in Milos are the Adamas Port, Polonia, and Plaka. There are many smaller areas such as Klima, but I missed out on it because I didn’t have a a rental car. 

If you are in any of these main areas getting around by foot is easy most things are within walking distance. But getting to Polonia from Plaka is not a short walk. It’s not possible on foot. 

The distance between Plaka and Polonia Is: 10 km or 6 miles, a typical car journey takes 15-20 minutes. 

Public Bus:

Milos has a public bus, the main station is at the Port of Adamantas. The bus schedule is conveniently posted right at the bus stop. 

I recommend downloading the bus schedule on your phone. You can download my free Google Map with all the locations pinned in the post so you’ll have quick access to it. 

The bus is a good option for budget travelers, but the bus schedule has limited hours of operation. The route timetable varies by month/week.

Also, depending on the route, it doesn’t run frequently enough, in my experience. 

For example, if you want to do a photo shoot at the popular Sarakiniko Beach at sunrise you need a car. The earliest bus is at 10:10.

For reference, the bus does go to popular spots like Sarakiniko Beach, Fyriplaka Beach, Paliochori Beach, and Papafragus Beach.

Car Rentals & Quad Bikes

Not to sound like a broken record, but the best bet to get around Milos easily is to rent a car.

I recommend a small car as it will help you navigate the narrow roads.

You’ll have access to those best beaches with crystal-clear waters off the beaten path.

From the small towns to the catacombs of Milos, a car allows you to get to all the main attractions on the island. The freedom you will have to explore the island is priceless. 

The cost per rental car per day is around 50 to 60 euros. This may seem like a lot, but trust me, the car rental works out to better prices than if you were to take taxis. I nearly went bankrupt trying to explore the island via taxi. 

For something cheaper and more adventurous, Milos is the perfect place to rent Quad bikes. I made a friend on the island who rented one for 30 euros a day.

We took the bike down dirt roads, through narrow streets, and to some other great places and the coolest small beaches. 

Pros and Cons of Renting a Car in Milos: 

Now having a car on the Greek island of Milos can significantly enhance your travel experience, but it’s important to consider both the advantages and drawbacks.

Here’s my breakdown of car rentals, with three pros and two cons:

Pros:

• Flexibility and Freedom: Having your own car allows you to explore Milos at your own pace, without being tied to the schedules of public transportation. You can visit remote beaches, hidden villages, and other off-the-beaten-path locations that might be difficult to reach otherwise.
• Convenience: Renting a car offers convenience, especially if you’re carrying beach gear, cameras, or other equipment for photos. You can easily move from one location to another, manage your time more efficiently, and have a secure place to keep your belongings while exploring. Plus, you’ll have more time to check out the rock formations, main attractions, seaside restaurants, small towns, and the nearby beaches. 
• Comprehensive Exploration: The Volcanic Island of Milos is known for its diverse landscapes, from stunning beaches like Sarakiniko to its traditional fishing villages. With a car, you can cover more ground on your first trip to this magical island. You’ll be able to experience a wider variety of sights and have more time for beach day trips, turquoise water boat tours, sea cave exploring, and dining at the best restaurants. 

Cons:

• Driving Challenges: Milos has many dirt roads and narrow streets. These narrow streets and winding roads can oftentimes be steep, which creates a challenge if you’re not used to driving in such conditions. Additionally, parking can be limited in popular areas, especially during peak season.
• Cost: Renting a car can be an added expense to your travel budget. This includes not just the rental fee, but also fuel costs, insurance, and possibly parking fees. For a solo traveler, this might be a significant consideration. But if you can reduce other costs in Milos, it is well worth getting the car.

Overall, renting a car in Milos is a really good idea. It can greatly enrich your travel experience.

Taxis and Private Transfers:

Taxis are not cheap, and not easy to find. In general, there are not many of them on the island.

I had to wait up to 30 minutes to get picked up after dinner. You will need to have cash as they likely don’t take credit cards.

This goes for everywhere in Greece, including Athens.

No, you won’t find Uber or any taxi app in Milos. The only way to get a taxi in Milos is to call them or text them via WhatsApp
