I’m going to go out on a limb here and say it: staying in a hotel is often a better choice for solo female travelers than booking an Airbnb—especially if you’re only visiting a destination for a few days.
After nearly 15 years of solo travel across Europe, I’ve come to this conclusion through plenty of personal experience. While it might be a debatable take, I’ve got some solid reasons to back it up.
Here are nine reasons why solo female travelers might find hotels to be a better option than Airbnb.

1. Enhanced Security Features & Easy Check In
As a woman traveling alone in a new city, arriving at a hotel with front desk staff has been very comforting. Some hotels even have 24/7 front desk staff.
This level of security has provided me with peace of mind, especially when traveling alone in unfamiliar places.
Nowadays, Airbnb hosts usually prefer that you check yourself in with instructions on how to access the place.
While some people might love a remote check-in where they have to find the key box and check in themselves. I hate it.
It feels like extra work and it can be stressful if you just got off a long flight.

LUGGAGE: A significant drawback of staying at an Airbnb is the occasional lack of luggage storage upon arrival or after checkout. While some cities offer luggage storage services, it’s an additional hassle that I prefer to avoid, especially when traveling solo.

2. Professional Standards
Hotels operate under regulated standards for cleanliness, service, and maintenance. So, if you show up and your room is not clean, you can likely get it sorted on the spot.
Unlike Airbnb properties, which can vary greatly in quality, and you have to battle it out online with the host and then Airbnb.
When you are traveling alone, this is something that could ruin your whole experience and possibly turn you against solo travel as a whole.
Hotels provide consistent professionalism (usually), reducing the risk of unpleasant surprises.

3. Central Locations
Many hotels are located in city centers or popular tourist areas, making it easier for solo travelers to access transportation, restaurants, and attractions.
Airbnb listings, on the other hand, might be in more remote or residential neighborhoods. Don’t get me wrong, I want to experience more authentic neighborhoods, but if I only have a few days, I want to stay as central as possible.

4. Immediate Assistance
In case of any issue—be it with the room, safety concerns, or medical emergencies—hotel staff are available to assist immediately.
With Airbnb, you often rely on the host, who may not be as responsive or nearby.
5. No Awkward Interactions
Hotels eliminate the need to meet with a host or share a space with strangers, as can happen with certain Airbnb options.
For solo female travelers, avoiding potentially uncomfortable interactions is a significant benefit.

6. Better Amenities
Hotels offer amenities like room service, housekeeping, fitness centers, and concierge services.
As a woman traveling alone, these extras can enhance the experience and provide comfort and convenience.

7. Predictable Costs
Hotels generally provide clear pricing with no hidden fees, unlike Airbnb, which may include unexpected cleaning fees, service charges, or deposit requirements.
This transparency makes budgeting easier.
My biggest gripe is the required cleaning fee, yet I have never stayed at an Airbnb that also didn’t expect me to clean it when leaving.
8. Safer Social Dynamics
Hotels provide a communal atmosphere, surrounded by fellow travelers and professional staff, which enhances security and sociability.
In contrast, Airbnbs, especially those in more secluded locations, can feel lonelier and less secure for solo travelers.
For those new to solo travel, the sense of community in a hotel can instantly alleviate feelings of loneliness and foster a sense of connection.

9. Easy Cancellations and Modifications
Hotels often have flexible cancellation policies, especially with certain booking platforms. Airbnb cancellations, however, can vary greatly depending on the host’s policies, which might not always favor the traveler.
I had to cancel a solo trip to Paris in January, and the host was unwilling to refund the money. It was a major bummer.
Budget Lover’s Reason to Choose A Hotel vs Airbnb
Guess what? There are no loyalty programs to stack up those sweet, sweet, free stays. Kind of a miss, right?
This is also why I recommend hotels, especially if you are solo and aren’t staying in a budget-friendly destination.

When to Pick Airbnb Over a Hotel
If I’m settling into a city for over a week, I’m all about Airbnb. It’s perfect for when I plan on using that kitchen to maybe actually cook something.
You know, the longer you stay at an Airbnb, the better the deal usually gets, unlike hotels where long stays don’t always mean better prices.
Plus, if you’re in town for a good while, you don’t need to be smack dab in the middle of everything. You’ve got the time to wander and explore.

Final Thoughts
Choosing the right place to stay can make or break your solo travel vibes. Having a spot where you can chill and feel secure is super key when you’re on your own in a new place.
My verdict? I’m team hotel over Airbnb.
