Driving in Mallorca: Everything you need to know
If you are planning a Mallorca road trip it’s a good idea to do your research before arriving in the Balearic Islands. As much as I like to wing it when I travel, I highly recommend you read all the travel guides you can.
1. Should you rent a car in Mallorca?
Renting a car is the best way to explore Mallorca unless you plan to just hang out in Palma. But trust me, there is so much to see in Mallorca, you don’t want to just stay in Palma your whole trip!
When researching rental cars, I have some experience to share that should be helpful. There are many companies that provide car rental services, and they offer different types of vehicles including luxury cars, SUVs, vans, and more.

2. Familiarize yourself with the rules of the road
Make sure you are familiar with Mallorca’s driving rules before heading out on the road.
- Speed Limit: The speed limit in urban areas is usually 50km/h, and on highways, it can be a maximum speed of up to 90-100km/h. Also, children under 12 years old must travel in the back seat and all passengers must wear their seat belts.
- Toll Roads: Good news there are no tolls in Mallorca!
- Flip Flops: It is against the law to drive in flip flops in Mallorca
- Passing Cars: Passing cars can only be done on the left side of the road.
- Driving: In Mallorca and mainland Spain, you drive on the right-hand side of the road
- Emergency Services Line in Spain: Dial 112
- Legal Alcohol Limit: The legal limit is .05% but it is a serious offense to drive under the influence, so just don’t do it.
- Cell Phones: Avoid using your phone and other handheld devices while driving as it’s illegal in Mallorca.
3. You should plan ahead
Before you hit the road, plan out your route to avoid getting lost or stuck in traffic. I recommend you use a GPS navigation app such as Google Maps or Waze for navigation assistance.
Upgrade Cell Phone Plan: I ALWAYS recommend you have arranged to have internet service when traveling. Call your cell phone carrier ahead of time to ensure you will be connected. Get a European Sim Card here!
PRO TIP: Use offline maps. Using Google Maps will suck the life out of your data.
4. Be aware of wildlife
When driving in Mallorca, Spain you should be wearing of what could come jumping out at you on the road.
Mallorca is home to many wild animals, so keep an eye out for them when you are driving. The most common animals you might see are goats, sheep, cows, and horses.

Mallorca is a popular destination for cyclists from all over the world! Be sure to be extra cautious when driving, as there are many cyclists on the road.
This is especially true in the mountains!
6. Drive defensively
Driving defensively is always a must, especially in Mallorca! Make sure you pay attention to the other drivers and their behavior on the road.
The locals can be a little aggressive behind the wheel, so drive within Mallorca with a bit of confidence.
7. Avoid driving at night
I recommend avoiding driving at night, as it can be more dangerous due to the lack of visibility and increased presence of drunk drivers.
These small roads can be very dark at night. I always was sure to park my car before the sun went down.
Is it Easy to Drive in Mallorca?
I am a very cautious and timid driver, but I found driving in Mallorca manageable.
Driving in the old town was a bit more challenging because the roads are so narrow. But once you hit the open road driving is much easier.
However, there are some areas that may prove difficult for drivers not familiar with the area. Mallorca has many winding mountain roads and narrow streets which require careful attention from drivers.
It is also important to be aware of the local speed limits, as they can vary quite a bit. Additionally, driving in Mallorca can be harder during peak tourist season when there are more cars on the road.
In general, driving in Mallorca is doable for most drivers!

Driving in Spain Requirements
In order to legally drive in Mallorca, drivers must abide by the following requirements:
- Age Requirements: You must be 18 years to drive a car. However, a car rental company typically has higher age limit restrictions. In every case, you must have a valid driver’s license for at least 1 year.
- You must carry your passport with you at all times.
- You must carry your rental agreement within the vehicle.
- You must have a valid credit card in order to rent a car.
- If you don’t have an EU driver’s license you will need an international driving permit.

There are also many private car parks available if you plan on staying longer in one area.
Finding a parking spot in the summer months in Palma could pose to be more of a challenge near the major tourist attractions.
The Most Scenic Drive in Mallorca
If you are looking for a scenic drive in Mallorca, I recommend driving along the coast from Palma to Port de Soller. This route is popular among road-trippers and has stunning views of the crystal blue Mediterranean Sea.
Along the way, you will find quaint towns and villages such as Deia, Valldemossa, and Soller.

Winding roads can be fun to drive in Mallorca. The Sa Calobra Road is the most scenic road full of hairpin bends and should be driven with caution.
The roads in Mallorca are in good condition but, still, you need to be careful.

What I love about Mallorca is that it is an incredibly diverse island. If you’re planning on driving in the mountains in Mallorca, it pays to be prepared. The roads are winding and can be dangerous, so take extra care when driving.
Make sure that you drive at a speed suitable for you, and be extra vigilant about observing the speed limits.

Public transportation is decent in Palma. You can explore the old town on foot and take public transport down to the beach. I spent the best 4 nights in Mallorca on a solo trip.
